Step 2: Customize Your spin-to-win Wheel Campaign

Here’s how the template looks like in the OptinMonster editor right now:

Making changes to your spin-the-wheel popup is really simple.

I’ll begin by changing the text. Click on the text you want to change and edit it directly in the OptinMonster editor:

Next, you’ll want to customize the rewards that appear on the spin game. To do that, click on the wheel image in your editor:

Here, you’ll see a menu appear on the left-hand panel. You can edit the section and wheel colors:

To change the rewards within the sections, click on the Customize Wheel Sections button:

You’ll see a new window that allows you to change how you want the wheel campaign to work:

You can edit the following things about your spin wheel campaign:

  • Can Win: This lets you make options that can’t be won which is useful if you have a product that recently went out of stock and you need to replace it. You can also turn off options like ‘spin again’ or ‘no luck this time’ to make sure all your participants win a prize.
  • Win Chance: This shows the odds of your customer winning that specific prize based on how many options are available to win.
  • Label: This is the name of the prize that will be on your spin wheel.
  • Coupon Code: This is the coupon code that the user will receive when they win a specific prize.

With these options, you can create custom prizes for your visitors to win:

Next, I’ll set up a few display rules. It’ll help you control when and where the popup appears.

Step 3: Set Your Display Rules

At the top of your editor menu, click Display Rules:

  • Triggers

Targets are rules that will show a popup based on users’ characteristics. This includes things like where the user is located, what device they use, or how they’ve interacted with your site in the past.

Triggers are rules that use your site traffic’s behavior to determine if a popup should appear. That can be events such as:

For today, I’ll show you how to configure an Exit-Intent® trigger. This means that our spin-to-win wheel game will appear to users if they try to leave your site.

This is an incredibly effective trigger for engaging abandoning visitors. As an example, Crossrope used the Exit-Intent® popup to grow its email list by 900%.

Back to your OptinMonster dashboard, click on the time on page condition. This will pull up your display rule options:

Next, you can choose which device you want your exit-intent popup to appear on. You can choose between:

  • Mobile-only

Next, I’ll customize where the spin wheel popup appears. To do this, I’ll leave the current URL path option as it is. But I’ll click on is any page condition and change it to contains:

Here, you’ll need to enter the URL slug of the pages where you want the spin wheel campaign to appear.

For instance, let’s say you have an eCommerce store that sells skincare, makeup, and supplements products.

You might have a website structure where each of your product pages includes the URL path, such as:

www.mysite.com/supplements

So if you’re creating a spin-the-wheel campaign specifically for makeup products, you’ll have to enter the 2nd URL slug. To apply this condition, add the term ‘/makeup’ in the field next to contains:

Once you’ve set the best display rules for your site’s campaign and goals, it’s time to integrate the popup with your email service provider.

Step 4: Integrate With Your Email Service Provider

Your eCommerce website design can be top-notch, but if it doesn’t function well, you’re going to have some issues.

Design trends like automatic image sliders, video backgrounds, transparent buttons, and parallax scrolling are popular because, well, they look nice. When they work, that is.

But in reality, they’re prone to glitches.

These design elements can also slow down your website if carried out poorly and may distract the visitor from reaching the checkout page.

And considering how both site speed and user experience are SEO ranking factors you need to consider, these design elements may not be worth it.

Functionality is what UX is all about. It’s not about adding extra elements and creating “fluff.” Every aspect of your page needs to support what you want the visitor to do.

If you look at a website like Amazon, it doesn’t have the most beautiful design. But it has excellent functionality.

Amazon exists to convert traffic into sales, and everything about their site design supports that.

7. Use Geo-Location Targeting

Advanced eCommerce owners use geo-location targeting to display location-specific offers.

Or that they only have a certain amount of time before an offer expires. Amazon is, as you may suspect, really good at this:

Knowing that the offer expires in a few hours make their call to action, Add to Cart, very tempting.

9. Create a One-Click Checkout

Adding calls-to-action is a good step towards getting visitors to add items to their cart. Unfortunately, the average cart abandonment percentage is 76%.

In other words, nearly 8 out of 10 visitors that add a product to their cart will leave before paying a single cent.

However, there are things you can do to optimize checkout and keep those shoppers moving forward with their purchase.

Consider skipping the cart and adding a one-click checkout button right on the product’s page. Amazon does this and used to have exclusive rights to the technology.

But since they lost their patent for the one-click checkout button, you can use it to your benefit.

10. Let Users Checkout As Guests

Another reason for consistent cart abandonment is requiring users to create an account to complete their purchase.

But what about getting their email address and contact information?

Sure, you can push them for it. So long as you’re OK with 34% of your guests walking away because there isn’t a guest checkout option.

That’s right. If you don’t allow guest checkout, over 1 in 3 customers will move on to a competitor’s page.

Hence why so many big companies, like Nike, always allow guest checkout:

Plus, you can still get your customer’s email as part of a typical checkout flow. Then, you let your impressive email marketing skills take care of the rest.

Simply add those emails into a funnel, starting with an automated email series. Then you focus on making changes to your checkout flow, like adding a guest checkout.

The fewer steps your visitor has to go through, the more likely they are to finish their purchase.

11. Make Your Product’s Listing Page Informative

If you have a product listing page loaded with information, it will do the selling for you, which is what you created it for, right?

Some essentials to include in your listing pages are images, price, availability, breadcrumbs (for easy navigation), and product options.

These best practices won’t only help your eCommerce UX, but will also help you with SEO.

You want people (and Google) to understand the contents of your page. And content-rich, user-friendly pages consistently rank higher.

Let’s look at one of Get Bullish’s product pages as an example.

The top half of their screen has a quality product image, breadcrumbs in the upper menu, the price clearly listed, and the call to action (Add to Cart) in an easy-to-find location.

Then, as you scroll down a bit, you have more information about the product, and it includes a product recommendation, along with an incentive to buy (free shipping over $40) and ways to share the product on social media.

Everything about this product page design helps the user AND makes Google happy. That’s the sweet spot you should be looking for with your product pages, too.

12. Include Reviews on Product Pages

Including customer reviews or testimonials on your product pages can be a very powerful tool in converting visitors into buyers.

Visitors aren’t only looking for reviews of the product itself but also want to learn about the service customers received when ordering products.

By displaying customer reviews on the product’s listing page, you’re showing new visitors that you’re a trustworthy seller.

And since 88% of consumers make purchases from eCommerce sites with primarily positive reviews, you can’t afford to leave them off your product pages.

Note the distinction “primarily” positive reviews.

If you have a few negative reviews, don’t worry. Those can actually help make your site and products look more credible.

After all, you can’t please everyone!

You just need to learn how to respond to negative reviews in a way that puts you in a positive light.

Amazon’s review sections are the perfect example. They have ratings, show responses by feature, and almost all products have over 50 reviews.

Visitors on the mobile landing page can select the option they want from those 2 buttons, log in to their account, or use the menu to see more options.

Go further in testing things like hiding certain elements that are unnecessary on specific screen sizes, making any non-essential text smaller, and playing around with different icons for better visibility on important links.

Be aware that this list isn’t comprehensive. After all, every industry, business, and product type has its own distinctive strategies for pricing. However, these strategies will give you an overview of some of the best ways to approach your product pricing.

Cost-Plus Pricing

Cost-plus pricing is perhaps the simplest approach. You simply calculate your exact cost-per-unit and then add the desired profit margin to reach your selling price.

Pros: This strategy is straightforward, and it ensures that you meet your bottom line. It’s a good choice for physical products that don’t experience much fluctuation in production costs.

Cons: If used on its own, cost-plus pricing ignores a lot of vital factors, such as market demand and competition.

One of the first steps is to work out your content marketing mission. It’s a brief statement of who your audience is, how you’ll reach them, and what they’ll gain from your content. A good example is this content marketing mission statement from CIO.com:

Here’s a formula you can use to create your own content marketing mission:

We provide [target audience] with [type of content] to help them [business goals].

Business goals are an important part of the process. They set out what your business will gain from content marketing. Typical content marketing goals include improving sales, getting more leads, and increasing traffic. Learn more about content marketing goals here.

This formula can also work for B2C marketing because your target audience always has goals. For example, a B2C health brand could create informational articles (that’s the type of content) for women over 50 (target audience) to help them survive menopause (goal).

And, of course, you need to say how you’ll measure success. These are your key performance indicators (KPIs). These can include revenue targets, numbers of subscribers, increased visitor numbers, and more.

2. Know Your Audience

An essential step in any content strategy is knowing who you’re marketing to. This will help you target your content appropriately. This is important because marketing works best when it’s relevant. If you create content for everyone, you’re not creating it for anyone.

A starting point is getting demographic data via Google Analytics, as well as analytics from social media and email. This will tell you the age, gender, education, and income of your target audience.

You can also collect feedback from customers to help you understand their priorities, decide where to reach them and flesh out buyer personas. Buyer personas will bring these two sets of information together so you know what content to create, how it will help your audience, and what will make them care about it.

If you’ve got content already, it’s important to work out if it’s meeting your goals and delivering on those KPIs. That’s why it makes sense to audit your content. That’s a three-step process:

  1. Log what you have
  2. Assess whether it’s working
  3. Find content gaps

A good tool for logging your content is Screaming Frog. It’s a search engine optimization (SEO) tool but is also a great way to quickly grab all the URLs from your site. You can also easily find duplicate pages and identify missing titles and descriptions. Learn more about using Screaming Frog in our SEO guide.

Another useful tool is SEMRush. It includes a content audit tool that assesses the content length, inbound links, and social shares.

Once you have the data from both of these tools, it’s easy to see what’s working, what needs to be improved, and what needs to be replaced. You can also quickly identify content gaps, places where creating a new piece of content could help achieve your goals.

6. Do Keyword Research and Create Content

One crucial part of creating content is doing keyword research. That’s because you want people to find your content online so they visit your site. Keywords are the terms people use to search for content. And they’re also the terms Google uses to identify what your content is about.

There are three basic types of keywords to include in your content:

  • Short keywords that identify a broad concept or group of items, like “socks”
  • Medium keywords, which can be 2 or 3 words that narrow down a concept, like “women’s socks”
  • Long-tail keywords, which are longer, more specific phrases, like “women’s cotton hiking socks”

Keywords in content also have to help searchers and Google match your content to what they’re looking for. This is called search intent, and there are four types:

  • Navigational, where people search for a specific site
  • Informational, where they’re trying to get the answer to a question
  • Investigational, where they are narrowing down pre-purchase options
  • Transactional, where searchers are ready to buy

Researching keywords for content marketing involves:

  • Brainstorming good ideas
  • Checking Google Analytics and Google Search Console to see what keywords already bring searchers to your site
  • Using keyword research tools to find the right keywords to include in your content. One of our favorite tools is SEMrush, which we mentioned earlier. You can find more keyword research tools here.

Once you’ve found the keywords you need, you’ll need to include them in your content. Some key places to use keywords are:

  • The title of your page and your content
  • The SEO title of your content or page, which may be different
  • The meta description for your content
  • Throughout the body of the content
  • In links to that piece of content and social updates about that content

How Long Should Your Content Be?

It’s worth knowing that content is one of the top SEO ranking factors, so it’s essential to get it right. Although Google doesn’t cite content length as an SEO ranking factor, the research shows that longer, more in-depth content gets more top ten search positions.

It also gets more backlinks and shares, adding social signals to boost rankings even further.

When you write longer content, the same rules apply. Optimize by sprinkling keyword phrases in where appropriate. But be sure to avoid the black hat SEO practice of keyword stuffing.

7. Decide on Your Lead Magnet

Content is an ideal lead-generation tool. One way to get more leads with content is to create a lead magnet. An ideal lead magnet:

  • Solves a real problem for your customers
  • Gives a solution that’s quick and easy to implement
  • Is valuable, but easy to digest
  • Shows your expertise

Believe it or not, many marketers don’t know what an effective content marketing program looks like, says the CMI.

So, in this section, we’re going to look at content marketing ROI. Content marketing ROI is about how much you earn from content marketing compared with the amount you spend.

To work out this figure, track:

  • The amount you spend on content creation
  • What you spend on content distribution
  • What you earn

Then use this formula from Convince and Convert to work out ROI:

Return minus investment, divided by investment, expressed as a percentage

So if you spend $5000 on creating a piece of content, and get leads worth $20000, then your ROI is 300%:

  • $20000-$5000 = $15000
  • $15000/$5000 = 3
  • 3 x 100% = 300%

If you earn more in sales than you spend on content production and distribution, then it’s worth it.

But as we know, measuring content marketing success isn’t just about money. Some of the other areas to pay attention to include:

  • Whether your content is generating leads. If people are responding and contacting you, then you have the prospect of making sales eventually.
  • If your content is generating sales, which you can measure in Google Analytics and your eCommerce platform
  • Traffic and onsite engagement
  • Social media success
  • SEO, and getting better content positions in SERPs
  • Prominence and authority, both online and offline

Here are the strategies I’ll share to help you grow your YouTube email list:

1. Create a Lead Magnet

Offering lead magnets is one of the best ways to grow your email list quickly and improve your lead generation.

A lead magnet is a valuable piece of content that businesses offer to potential customers in exchange for their email addresses. It can be an ebook, a template, an infographic, an online course, or other freebies that people can download from your site.

Here’s an example of a lead magnet that James Wedmore promotes to his viewers through YouTube videos:

Lead magnets are known to improve conversions because people don’t give away their email addresses for free. They need an incentive that they love in exchange for their email addresses.

In digital marketing, offering content upgrades is one of the most effective types of lead magnets. A content upgrade is a lead magnet that you create specifically for a particular YouTube video.

Let’s take James’s lead magnet for example. He offers his viewers a chance to download the long-form, PDF version of ‘8 Steps Sales Video Formula’ as a lead magnet on his video on the same topic.

It makes perfect sense for someone to be interested in downloading the longer PDF version after watching James’ full video.

This means creating a lead magnet can be as easy as transcribing an existing video into a PDF format and adding more meat to it.

2. Add a Call to Action (CTA)

After you have your lead magnet ready, you’ll need to promote it by adding a relevant CTA to your videos.

A CTA is when you ask your viewers to do something specific, such as adding a button that asks people to ‘Please like this video’ or ‘Subscribe to our channel.’

A CTA is typically a button, link, or message that prompts users to act immediately, such as purchasing a product, subscribing to a newsletter, or signing up for a service.

In our case, you’ll need to specifically ask your viewers to download your lead magnet.

Here’s an example CTA from one of HubSpot Marketing’s YouTube videos:

Remember to make the CTA message visually prominent, use action-oriented language, create a sense of urgency, and highlight the benefits to make your CTA effective.

3. Link to Your Lead Magnet Everywhere

Once you’re confident of adding a compelling CTA to your lead magnet, it’s time to promote it everywhere across your YouTube channel.

For this, you’ll first need to create a landing page on your site for viewers to access the lead magnet content. This will help you drive traffic to your site while letting you capture more leads.

You don’t have to create a fancy landing page to include your lead magnet. Just include the following elements to create a perfect landing page:

  • Headline
  • Subheadline
  • Copy
  • Image (or other media assets)
  • Lead magnet
  • Social proof
  • CTA

You’ll also need to add an optin form on the landing page for people to enter their email addresses. For the best results, I recommend using a 2-step optin form because it improves the chances of conversions.

Once you have a landing page with an optin form, here are all the places you should include the link to your landing page:

Video Description

This is the most obvious place that gets a lot of views. Adding the link to the video description improves your chances of more people clicking on it and joining your email list.

Remember the example we saw earlier from James? Here’s how the link to his lead magnet appears in his video description:

Channel Header

The header of your channel page is a great place to link to your lead magnet. This can help you convert new subscribers who land on your channel even if they haven’t viewed any of your videos.

Here’s an example from Wes McDowell’s YouTube channel:

Note that a link won’t be clickable in the header since it’s an image. It’s just a space for you to draw people’s attention to what your lead magnet offers.

You can add the clickable link in the ‘Links’ section under the ‘About’ section. You can access the About section right under your YouTube channel’s header which expands when you click on it:
